Professor Włodzimierz Bolecki
Born
13 April 1952 in Warsaw, he is a literary historian and
theoretician. He graduated from the Warsaw University Institute
of Polish Studies. He received his Ph.D. in 1980, qualified
as associate professor in 1991, and received his professorial
title in 1996. He works at the PAS Institute of Literary
Research, and is head of the Historical Poetics Department
there.
His interests include historical poetics, 20th century
literature, Polish writers in exile, the theory and history
of narrative genres, intertextuality, stylistics, reception
of literary works, methodology of literary studies, and
various issues related to modernism and postmodernism in
literature.
He is the author of over 16 books, critical analyses for
special editions of literary works, more than 50 papers
published in Poland and abroad, and editor of many collective
works. He has written about texts by Wacław Berent, Czesław
Miłosz, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Witold Gombrowicz,
Bruno Schulz, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Aleksander Wat
and others. His book publications include: "Historia

w Warszawie" [I Saw Freedom in Warsaw] (1989); "Pre-teksty
i teksty" [Pre-texts and Texts] (1991;1998); "Ptasznik
z Wilna. O Józefie Mackiewiczu" [A Bird-Catcher from Vilnius: On Józef
Mackiewicz] (1991), "Prawdy niemiłe. Eseje" [Uncomfortable
Truths: Essays] (1993); "Polowanie na postmodernistów (w
Polsce)" [Hunting Postmodernists (in Poland)] (1999); "Rozmowy
w Dragonei" [Conversations in Dragonea] (1997) and "Rozmowy
w Neapolu" (2000) [Conversations in Naples] with Gustaw
Herling-Grudziński. Member of the editorial board of "Teksty
Drugie" [Second Texts] bi-monthly, issued by the PAS Institute
of Literary Research.
He has given lectures at universities in many countries
including Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Slovenia,
Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA. In
2000 and 2001 he was visiting professor at the University
of Uppsala in Sweden. From 1996 to 2004 he was professor
at the Department of Romanticism and Modern Literature
of the University of Łódź.
He belongs to several scientific and literary organizations, such as: The Association of Polish Writers, Polish PEN-Club, The Warsaw Scientific Association.Societas Scienitarium Varsoviensis, the Foundation "Polish Department at the University of Jerusalem".
