Professor Jan Gawęcki
Member of the FNP Council

Born 8 August 1944 in Skierniewice, he is a graduate of the Food Technology Department of the School of Agriculture in Poznań.
A faculty member of the August Cieszkowski Academy of Agriculture in Poznań, he heads the Human Nutrition Hygiene Section there.
His interests include the physiological conditioning of food selection and consumption; the impact of xenobiotics on the bioavailability of nutrients; biomarkers for functional food products; the evaluation of nutritional habits in various population groups; and nutritional education issues.
He has promoted eight Ph.D. recipients and supervised over 200 MA theses.
He is the author or co-author of nearly 250 specialist publications in the field of nutritional physiology and hygiene, and the author and/or editor a large number of books including the handbooks 'Podstawy żywienia czlowieka' [Fundamentals of Human Nutrition], 'Żywienie człowieka zdrowego i chorego' [Human Nutrition: Feeding the Healthy and the Sick], 'Metodologia badań doświadczalnych w nauce o żywności i żywieniu' [The Methodology of Experimental Research in Food and Nutrition Sciences].
Professor Gawęcki was in charge of the Agricultural Sciences Group of the State Committee for Scientific Research during its fourth term of office; he is currently a member of the Research Support Group of the Committee, and an expert on its Foresight pilot project.
A deputy chairman of the PAS Committee of Nutritional Sciences, and a member of the PAS Food Science Committee, Professor Gawęcki is also a member of the Research Boards of the Institute of Food and Nutrition and the Institute of the Biotechnology of the Food and Agricultural Industry in Warsaw, the Institute of Herbs and Herbal Products in Poznań, and the Central Refrigerating Engineering Laboratory in Łódź.
He is the editor of the 'Polish Journal of Food and Nutrition Sciences', and a member of the editorial boards of the following periodicals: 'Żywienie Człowieka i Metabolizm' [Human Nutrition and Metabolism], 'Herba Polonica', and 'Prace Laboratoriów Przemysłu Spożywczego' [Food Industry Laboratories: New Developments].
