Professor Janina Jóźwiak
Chairperson of the FNP Council
Born
15 February 1948 in Cieśle, she is a graduate of the Main
School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw (now the Warsaw
School of Economics). Now a professor at the WSE, she is
also director of the Statistics and Demography Institute
there.
Her areas of interest include mathematical demography (in
particular the modelling of population dynamics and structure),
demographical forecasting, and the application of statistical
methods to population studies. She is the author of over
a hundred publications dealing with various demography-
and statistics-related topics issued in Poland and abroad,
including a monograph "Mathematical Models of Population",
NIDI, The Hague, 1992.
Between 1993 and 1999 Professor Jóźwiak was Rector of the
Warsaw School of Economics; from the year 2000 to 2004
she held the position of Deputy Chairperson of the State
Committee for Scientific Research during its fourth term
of office, and occupied the chair of its Social, Economic
and Legal Sciences Group.
She is currently Chairperson of the European Association
for Population Studies, Deputy Chairperson of the Polish
Demographical Society and Poland in the United Europe Committee
of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as co-ordinator
of the Knowledge and Innovations for Development segment
of the Polish Forum of the Lisbon Strategy.
Professor Jóźwiak is also a member of the International
Max Planck Research School in Demography consortium; the
editorial board of the publication series "European
Studies of Population"; and the Board of the Central European Forum
for Migration Research.
