Professor Kazimierz Stępień Deputy Chairman of the FNP Council
Born
15 November 1940 in Częstochowa, he is a graduate of the
Warsaw University Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. Since
1962 he has been an associate of the Astronomical Observatory
of Warsaw University, currently as a professor.
Chairman of the PAS Astronomy Committee since 2003, he
is a member of the PAS Committee for Space and Satellite
Research, and the Board of the PAS Nicolaus Copernicus
Astronomy Centre in Warsaw which he chaired during the
years 1996-2003. He was in charge of the Mathematics, Physics
and Astronomy Group of the State Committee for Scientific
Research during its fourth term of office.
During the years 1990-1996 he was Deputy Dean of the Faculty
of Physics at Warsaw University.
From 1970 to 1990 he was editor-in-chief of "Acta Astronomica",
an international scientific quarterly. During the years
1988-1990 he was deputy chairman of the Polish Astronomic
Society. He is a member of the International Astronomic
Union (a representative of Poland since 1994) and other
similar associations abroad.
His main field is astrophysics, in particular the theoretical
and observation-based research on variable stars, especially
those with magnetic surface fields.
Professor Stępień is the author of approximately 100 articles
and papers published in international scientific periodicals,
over 100 popular scientific articles and entries for encyclopaedias,
as well as an academic handbook "The Physics of the
Atmospheres of Stars" published by Warsaw University in 1983.
He has promoted five Ph.D. recipients.
