The FOUNDATION FOR POLISH SCIENCE (FNP) is
an independent, self-financing and non-profit organisation
established in
1991 as a result of the system transformation in Poland. The
Foundation's mission is to provide assistance and support to
the scientific community in Poland.
As an initial investment, FNP received 95 million zlotys allocated
by the State Treasury from the remainder of the Central Fund
for the Development of Science and Technology, liquidated in
1990.These assets, re-invested in the financial market, are
the source of revenue allocated for the statutory activities
of the Foundation.
Over 290 million zlotys generated in this way have been transferred
to the science sector to date, the current market value
of FNP assets exceeding 400 million zlotys.
The strategy of FNP is to support individual scientists and research groups working in various areas of the natural and the exact sciences and the humanities, being of greatest importance for the technological, cultural and economic development of Poland. The FNP supports projects fostering the development of science in Poland. Another important objective is to undertake activities aimed at facilitating the transfer of scientific and technological innovations to industry.
Meeting the above-mentioned objectives is realized both through individual prizes, fellowships or subsidies and undertaking various meaningful initiatives for the development of science in Poland. Prizes, stipneds and subsidies are granted solely on the competition basis, according to the FNP motto "supporting only the best so they can become even better".
The activities of the Foundation are supervised by the FNP Council whose members are nominated by the Minister of
Science and which represents Polish scientific community. The
Foundation reports annually to the Minister of Science.
Particular importance is attached to promoting young promising
researchers in Poland.
Recently, the Foundation has intensified its efforts aimed
at supporting international co-operation, and increased its
involvement in initiatives seeking to facilitate the exchange
of ideas and achievements within the scientific community.
