The 1990's saw a spectacular intensification and increase in
the scope of archaeological excavations throughout Poland.
This was brought about by the launching of numerous research
projects concerned with the origins of the Polish State,
and the necessity of initiating advanced and/or emergency
excavations at the site of large redevelopments.
Well aware of the importance of archaeology in historical research
on the one hand, and its lack of funding seriously hindering
any wide-ranging archaeological projects in Poland, the Foundation
provided significant financial support to this field of study
during the years 1995-2000. This was effected through the following
programmes:
ARCHEO (2000), focusing on the application of new technologies
and research methods in archaeology;
TRAKT (ROUTE, 1998-1999), intended as emergency financial
support for archaeological research carried out in areas
involved in the construction of the motorway network in Poland;
and
ADALBERTUS (1995-1997), initiated as a contribution to the
celebration of the millennium of the Gniezno Congress (held
in the year 1000), and aimed at the reconstruction of the
geographical and cultural environment of St Adalbertus' last
mission to evangelise the Baltic tribe of Prussians.
