In 2003, The European Heads of Research Councils (EUROHORCs), wishing to contribute to the building of the European Research Area, joined together in collaboration with the European Science Foundation (ESF), to create the European Young Investigator Award (EURYI).The aim of the EURYI AWARD was to attract outstanding young researches from all over the world to work in Europe for the further development of European science contributing to the building up of the next generation of leading European researchers.

The FNP joined this programme in 2006, which turned out to be the last edition of the prestigious scheme. Apart from the FNP, the following organizations, participated in 2006 edition of EURYI, a.o. FWF (Austria), GACR (Czech Republic), AF (Finland), CNRS (France), INSERM (France), DFG (Germany) , CNR (Italy), INFN (Italy), NWO (the Netherlands), SNF (Switzerland).

Assessment of the applications was undertaken in two stages, firstly at the national level (coordinated by the FNP) and secondly at the European level. The European Science Foundation managed the European phase of the review process and coordinates the funding.

THE TOTAL VALUE of an award cannot exceed a maximum of 1 250 000 euro and lasts for a 5-year period, subject to satisfactory progress .

The selection criteria for the EURYI AWARDS candidates were:

 - the research quality and potential of the applicant,

 - the originality as well as the groundbreaking character of the research proposal and its feasibility,

 - the potential of the candidate and the proposed research programme to improve the position of European research at the world level.
