NIH (USA)
NIH (National Institutes of Health) is the most important government institution carrying out research in the broadly defined field of biomedical sciences. NIH is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, and includes 27 institutes and centres in the United States. With an annual budget of more than 28 billion dollars, the NIH awards more than 50 000 grants every year, supporting the best scientists not only in the US, but also in other countries. The NIH’s own institutes and centres employ approximately 6000 scientists (mostly at the main NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland).
Cooperation between the NIH and FNP focuses on enabling young scientists from Poland (including doctors) to take up placements at NIH institutes. The main instruments of support offered by FNP are the KOLUMB and HOMING programmes. It is also planned to set up an “FNP-NIH Transition Career Award” – a special programme enabling joint support for the most talented young scientists.
