Polish Studies Abroad
POLISH STUDIES DEPARTMENTSAny country’s image abroad, and its participation in the international exchange of scientific ideas and cultural values, depend to a large extent on knowledge about that country which is shaped by foreign universities. This means that an extremely important element of the promotion of any country in the academic environment is the faculties, courses and specializations available connected with the country’s history and culture. Such university sections function as a kind of ambassador for the country in the place where they operate.
The Foundation supports the concept of creating departments of Polish Studies in prestigious academic centres in other countries. Polish Studies, most often functioning within Slavic language faculties, have many problems to overcome. The present situation in Europe and the US – in spite of all the differences – is comparable: Polish Studies have serious problems connected with financing, definition of their curricular identity, assignment to university study courses, student numbers, etc. For this reason the Foundation initiates actions aimed at creating Polish departments at the best foreign universities and maintaining their high standards.
