Seven distinguished scholars from the humanities and social sciences won professorial grants in the 18th edition of the MASTER/MISTRZ programme of the Foundation for Polish Science. They received a total of over PLN 2 million from the Foundation to pursue their research projects.

The purpose of the MASTER/MISTRZ programme, which was instituted in 1998, is to support distinguished scholars across all fields of inquiry who combine world-class research with training of the younger generation of researchers. The grants, awarded for up to three years and PLN 300,000, may be used to further the research the scholars are currently conducting or to pursue new research interests.

The winners are selected in a closed competition based on nominations from the academic community. All nominated research projects are evaluated in a two-stage process, first by reviewers and then by a panel of experts which draws up a recommended list of winners for approval by the Executive Board of the Foundation for Polish Science.

Each year the competition is devoted to a different field of study. In 2015 the competition was held for scholars from the humanities and social sciences.

To date the programme has recognised 207 distinguished scholars, who have brought a total of 996 young scientists into their research teams. From 1998 to 2015 the Foundation has awarded nearly PLN 53.6 million in the programme.

The gala awards ceremony for the winners of the MASTER/MISTRZ programme will be held on 28 October 2015 at 12 noon at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS) in Warsaw.
